SEALING ARTWORK WITH RESIN - ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

A very interesting post by Valorie Hunter, a member of the FB group FLUID ART ADDICTS.  Many artists seal their art with a coating of resin and Valorie has graciously shared several points and tips to help beginners avoid the same mistakes.  Other members of the group have also contributed to Valorie’s post with their own advice which we are sure all beginners will find very informative.

USING RESIN TO TOPCOAT ART

Valorie Hunter

So most of my paintings are sealed with resin because I embellish them with decals. I have struggled so much working with the stuff but have made some discoveries lately that I really wish someone had shared with me when I started, so I'm sharing in case even one person finds them helpful.

PAINT CONSISTENCY

In acrylic pouring, consistency of paint is a key factor.  It is most important that one is using the correct consistency for the technique one is doing.  Regardless of how well you think you can eyeball it, testing your paint consistency is important to avoid disappointing results.

It is also important to keep in mind that a technique may also need different paint consistencies, in its makeup.  One example is the BLOOM technique, which has three different paint consistencies.  The pillow is the thickest, the paint is thinner than the pillow and the cell activator (CA) is the thinnest.

How to do a paint consistency test ??

Preferably use a glazed tile but you can also use cardboard, glass or any other material that you can hold up and the paint can run down without hindrance.

Put the same sized drop of each of your paint mixes across the top.  Hold it up.  All the colours should run the same, if not, adjust the ones that are running slow.  Test again and repeat until they all run the same.
